Artist Feature – Lordy Dordie

We sat down with Artist Georgie Forbes, also known as Lordy Dordie, to discuss her art and creative process

Hi, I’m Georgie Forbes also known as Lordy Dordie. I’m a Brisbane-based artist and surface pattern designer with over 25 years of experience in bringing colour and joy to life through my art. I knew from a very young age—probably around four or five—that I wanted to be an artist. I always knew Art would somehow define me and be a huge part of my life and career; hence it’s a huge part of who I am and what I am driven to do. Most of my earliest memories were of being creative in some way or another – drawing, collaging, painting – and very early on I began to include pattern elements in my illustrations and over time that love of pattern became a signature element in my work.

How did you get started in the world of art and design?

My love of pattern and colour led me to study Fine Art & Fashion Design at Griffith University in Brisbane. Since then, I’ve spent over 25 years working as an artist and surface pattern designer, bringing my love of bold colours and intricate designs to everything from fashion and home decor to stationery and accessories. Today my work is all about bold patterns, vibrant colour, positive messaging and intricate details—designed to uplift and energise. I truly believe art has the power to bring joy and that’s always at the heart of what I create. Over the years I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with incredible Australian and international brands bringing my art to life across fashion, tableware, home décor, baby products, stationery and more. Creating joyful art that connects with people is what I love most!

Your work is full of bold colours and playful energy—what inspires your aesthetic?

Colour is my absolute passion! My aesthetic is all about joy, happiness and vibrancy – and colour plays a huge role in that. I’ve always been drawn to bold, expressive colour palettes because they have the power to uplift, energise and tell a story. I love experimenting with unexpected colour combinations and layering intricate details to create dynamic, vibrant artworks bursting with personality. My inspiration comes from everywhere—flowers with their striking shapes and vivid hues, textiles, music and the places I travel. I am a true flower lover at heart and Australian natives are an endless source of inspirationand a favourite of mine to paint. Their bold shapes, rich textures and vibrant colours make them a joy to paint.

Can you walk us through your creative process? Do you start with a clear vision, or does the piece evolve organically?

It’s usually a mix of both. Sometimes, I start with a specific colour palette or theme in mind, but my process is very fluid. I love to play with layers, textures and mark-making, letting the artwork evolve naturally. Often, my best pieces come from letting go of perfection and embracing spontaneity! If I am painting for a licensing job, then my creative process is more structured with initial sketches and planning before I dive into the final artwork.

How do you keep your creativity flowing when you hit a block?

Creative blocks happen to everyone and they usually happen to me about once a year! When I feel stuck, I step away and do something completely different—go for a walk, flip through art books or even just tidy my studio (which is rare!). Painting your surface a different colour (other than white) or changing mediums also helps. If I’ve been working digitally, I’ll switch to drawing, painting or collage. The key is to take the pressure off and let creativity come back naturally.

How do craft and handmade culture influence your work?

Even when my designs end up as digital prints, everything starts by hand. I love the raw, organic feel of painting, drawing, and collage—there’s something special about the imperfection of handmade art. I try to maintain that handmade essence in all my designs, whether they’re for an exhibition, textiles, for products or a licensing project. I feel the little details and textures make my work feel personal and unique!

If your artwork had a soundtrack, what would be on the playlist?

I love a mix of feel-good, upbeat, rock and retro tunes! I recently went to a Pearl Jam concert, my absolute favourite rock band in the 90s! My playlist is always changing, but it’s got to have great energy, a touch of nostalgia and a bit of quirkiness—just like my art.

What’s next for Lordy Dordie—any exciting projects or dreams on the horizon?

So much exciting stuff is happening! I recently was signed with an Art Licensing Agent, Jewel Branding Lordy Dordie – Jewel Branding which means my artwork will now be available to license globally—opening up incredible opportunities to see my designs on new products and in new markets across the world. I’ve recently launched a small clothing range and have some amazing collaborations in the works, including one with Gorman. I’m also developing online art courses, which I can’t wait to share. There’s always something colourful on the horizon and I can’t wait to share it all!

What’s your advice to emerging artists who want to build a brand with personality?

Be yourself and lean into what makes your art unique. It’s easy to compare yourself to others, but the strongest brands come from artists who are authentically themselves. Play with colour, experiment and don’t be afraid to show your personality—not just in your work, but in how you present yourself to the world….and most importantly, be patient! Building a brand takes time, so keep creating, keep showing up and trust the process.

Thanks Georgie!
