Pictured: 1910 Traditional Japanese Kimono, (back view to show embroidery), 1980 Modern version of the Cheongsam, and close up details
Come and delight in examples of Oriental fashion with The Cavalcade of History and Fashion and see how the Orient has influenced what we wear today.
One of the most significant contributions of Orientalism to Victorian fashion, in the 19th century, was the emergence of Eastern fabrics- silks, cottons, and linens from countries such as India, China, and Persia. Fabrics such as silk, brocade, and jacquard were used in evening wear, adding a touch of exoticism and luxury.
The Japanese kimono was one of the most iconic and influential Eastern fashion items to be incorporated into Victorian dress. Women’s fashion in the 1870s adopted the silhouette of the kimono, with flowing sleeves, loose-fitting bodices, and long, flowing skirts. The kimono’s delicate embroidery, vibrant colours, and luxurious fabrics were also replicated in Western designs.
The Chinese Cheongsam dress was a revolutionary garment in Western fashion in the 1920s, as it offered a silhouette that was both comfortable and fashionable. This dress, usually worn over trousers, featured a high neckline and slim-fit cut, with intricate Chinese embroidery and silk fabrics.
The popularity of Oriental fashion continued to grow in the 1960s and 1970s, with the rise of the hippie movement and the influence of Eastern spirituality. Today, Oriental fashion continues to inspire Western designers, with traditional Oriental motifs and patterns, embroidery, mandarin collars often appearing in modern fashion collections.
